FAIR Conference, Day 1 Wrap-up

Jeff Walker, as only a lawyer can do, provided extensive detail on the escape/release of Joseph from Liberty Jail.

Wendy Ulrich provided psychological therapy for hurting/disillusioned/angry LDS members, utilizing material from the book, Getting the Love You Want, by Harville Hendrix.  She did share my family verse – Isaiah 61:3.  Maybe, I will share more on Wendy’s presentation later.

And finally, John Sorensen shared future trends he sees in Book of Mormon studies.

  1. Naïve writings or thoughts about the BoM will be replaced by critical, analytical processes.
  2. Formerly apologetic studies, now there will be more original inquiries.
  3. There will be systematic approaches more than random thought.  See what everyone has said first.
  4. Cumulative, integrated study instead of stand alone approach
  5. Lone wolf scholars are being replaced by cooperative groups
  6. Adequate level of communication will become more difficult as complexity increases.  It will be harder for the public to get a handle on the issues.

And I think I might have missed a point or two.

  1. I kind of got the impression that Sorenson was telling a lot of the upcoming LDS scholars that he has done his part, and its time for him to step aside, and here are some of the areas that need more work with. It was quite interesting. I thought his humor with the questions was very enjoyable as well. It is going to take several good men to replace Sorenson alone, just as it does for Nibley. These men have been trail blazers and path busters for decades. None of us are up to their calibre………yet. We have some very good talent in the wings however. You got to listen to one of them, Bokovoy…….
