Mormon Presidents and “America’s-fastest growing religion”

Have you seen today’s article, “Would you vote for a Mormon President?” among the brothers and sisters in my Christian fundamentalism backyard? I encourage you to go check it out. I think Aaron offers some good thoughts in the discussion and debate around the table.

And while I am thinking about politics, can I ask my LDS friends a question, “Is Mormonism ‘America’s-fastest growing religion”? I recently picked up a Deseret Book 2007 Fall Conference Catalog.

blog-hi4lds.jpgTurn to page 5 and look at the catalog caption under the new hardcover book, Presidents and Prophets by Michael K. Winder. (Don’t forget to click on Mike’s official website.)

In this ground-breaking work, Mike Winder presents the story of America’s presidents and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From Washington to Bush, each President and their relationship with the Mormons is explored, and we see the Church rise from obscurity to political clout as America’s-fastest growing religion.

Im’ chuckling over the last four words of claimed clout by Deseret for American Mormonism. I would think the success is better internationally near or south of the Equator than here in America. (Postmodernism is seeking to engulf U.S.A Church LDS.) This ad sounds like the newspaper announcements of Independent Baptist Fundamental Churches in the 1960s . . . “Fastest Growing Sunday School in Town” . . . “Biggest Bus Ministry” . . . “Bursting at the Seams” . . . “Booming Days at such-and-such Church” . . . “The Largest Church in the City” . . . “Come Visit and See Why We Are Building So Fast”.

How about this church advertisement?

American churches are in deep do-do . . . lots of grandness but only two inches deep in God.”

But I don’t know how well that would fly in a church marketing catalog, we are too busy cruisin’ with pizzazz in all our American success.
