It is a nifty, pocketbook, dark blue, leatherbound hymnal.
Since the recent discussion on hymns, I felt prodded to do this.
And sitting by these four young LDS missionaries, they assure me that this 2002 revision is the latest. Periodically, here on HI4LDS, I will be suggesting my own revisions for your consideration.
I will be carrying this hymnal around in 2008. It is my first pocket edition. I love worshipping God with doctrinal hymns. And I hate it when evangelicals throw them out altogether. Sadly, some evangelical segments in America are losing their doctrines. I don’t know what they are worshipping.
Oh, sure enough, The First Noel, in this hymnal prints only the first two verses. I need to write the others back in.
And just looking here at hymn #235, “Should You Feel Inclined to Censure” – this is interesting.
What hymn book (or equivalent thereof) does your church use?
There are some really endearing hymns in the LDS hymnal. You can tell for sure if they were authored by a LDS by looking at the copyright below (either LDS or IRI). Other LDS authors that aren’t copyright include: William W. Phelps, Eliza R. Snow, Parley P. Pratt, Evan Stephens, Joseph Fielding Smith, John Widstoe, etc, etc.
Next you can buy Blake’s book(s)!
That’s a beautiful hymn, Todd, and I message I need more often than I get it. I had to look up some of the other hymns by the same writer, Phillip Paul Bliss. Talented man.
I don’t know if you know anything about music itself, but the music and lyrics to number 120 is beautiful. Some wonderful cord progressions. The lyrics and music are written by LDS folk. A favorite one is 253. The music is similar to some music you would hear in old protestant hymnals. It is also composed by an LDS author.
My favorite is 219.
Do you use a hymnbook at your church, Todd?
I don’t have the hymnal in front of me. I will look it up.
Our hymnbook is Majesty Hymns, and I have a lot of favorites, Tate. 🙂
Should You Feel Inclined to Censure is a favorite of mine, in large part because it is set to the same music as Brightly Beams our Father’s Mercy which I love. In case you were not aware, Todd, all the LDS music from the hymns and children’s songbook are available online.

It has an interactive page which will play you the music from the book and it also has audio recordings of each hymn so you can hear them if you are not familiar with them already. Pretty cool website actually, I used it a lot when I was the music leader for the primary children.
Music leader for the primary children?
Jacob, you are a man of hidden talents.
