My curiosity is acute. Are all LDS people premillennialists? Would the LDS Church allow room for any non-chiliasts within its doctrinal boundaries?
Presently, I have two LDS books on prophecy . . . one published this year . . . and one back in 1962. I look forward to comparing them with the evangelical, premill., interpretation of Ezekiel.
One last heart question—is LDS eschatology today, closer or further from evangelical, dispensational, pretribulational premillennialism?
I have so many questions for so many friends.
I’d say that Mormons are premillennialists as I understand the term.
I think Mormons differ primarily from Evangelicals over how they perceive the tribulation and Mormons definitely reject anything like the rapture as conceived of by some Protestants.
Mormons might accept “non-chiliasts” if any of us had any idea what a chiliast was….
Chiliasm – the belief in a thousand year millennial reign.
Six times in Revelations 20:1-7, you will see the Greek words, chilia ete, “thousand years”.
The conservative, Lutheran evangelical, R.C.H. Lenski whom I quoted earlier in “Response to Maggie’s letter in Newsweek”, despised most of the interpretations of chialists . . . labeling it as “certain Jewish opinions” . . . better yet, declaring that “the doctrine is a novum.”
Despite his blustering about chiliasm, I still like Lenski because of his fundamental orthodoxy.
I echo what Clark said. The big change in the past decade or so is that pre-millennial fervor of the sort that held that Christ’s coming in glory was going to be around the year 2000 or so has dissipated in most areas.
As a doctrinal matter, D&C section 77 (which is the best LDS reference on the subject) holds that Christ’s coming in glory will not occur at the *very* beginning of the seventh thousand years), but rather some time afterward, after the events described in Revelation 8 and 9 take place. So we could technically be in beginning of the Millennium, but clearly not in the Millennial era, as it is generally understood. See D&C 77:12-13.
The only real detailed annalysis, including a detailed chart, is found in a book from 2009 – Revelation, Apostasy, End-times, and “This Generation.”
No “rapture” before the tribulation.
A tribulation where first Satan’s wrath is felt, and then in the end God’s wrath.
A resurrection and rapture at the end of this flesh age.
A millennium which is supernatural (no flesh), including births to babies (supernatural – no marriages), with a final resurection at the end.
A new heaven and earth – a return to Eden.
I woul dsay that we LDS Do believe in a rapture we just do not refer to it as the rapture. We do believed that the Wicked will be burned at the Lord’s comming and those who are righteous will be caught up with Crist and those returning with Him ( City of Enoch and the Angels).
Our Rapture is not before the Tribulation period rather at the end of it. So you could say we are postribulationist in a Sense. But we also believe many wonderful and glorious things will be taking place during the tribulation period by those who do not follow after the beast and or the Anti-Christ. We believe the New Jerusalem will begin to built during that period in the area of Jackson County Missouri near present day Independence MO. We believe that America will be cut off from the rest of the world after it has been cleansed of it’s current wickedness. Once it is cut off people of other nations will not be able to reach her.
Another great book is titled Prophecy Key to the Futer By Duane S Crowthers. YOu can find it at Amazon or Deseret Book has it sometimes.
I can’t edit my last post but I though I would correct my typo here. I meant to type Christ towards the end of the first paragraph.
