Session #4 Handout – How do you explain the Tri-unity of God?
I could get into a long discussion of ___________ theological words such as economic Trinity, immanent Trinity, person, nature, substance, social model, mutually indwelling, eternally ordered, social order, subordination, subordinationism, center of self-consciousness, ontological equality, eternal generation, eternal procession, roles, and egalitarian.
We could take a step back in time and look at ___________terms related to the Trinity like persona and substantia.
Going earlier than the Latin era, we could explore the ___________ terms like hypostasis, ousia, monarchia, perichoresis, and taxis.
We could talk about the ___________________________.
We could try to explain the Trinity with _____________________.
But after millennia of discussions, it is still a fact that the Tri-unity of God is a mystery. Simply, our God is bigger and smarter than we.
How does one explain the Tri-unity of God?
You don’t.
But here is what you do. Trust and treasure such a magnificent, glorious God as revealed within the pages of Scripture. There is one God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And you defend against what God is not.
Gregory of Naziansus – No sooner do I conceive of the one than I am illumined by the splendor of the three; no sooner do I distinguish them than I am carried back to the one. When I think of any one of the three I think of him as the whole, and my eyes are filled, and the greater part of what I am thinking escapes me.
Jesus in Idaho Falls

When Jesus came into the coasts of Idaho Falls, he asked his disciples, saying, “Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?”
And they said, “Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.”

“But after millennia of discussions, it will still be a fact that your Tri-unity with the Father and the Holy Ghost will still be a mystery.
“Simply, you are bigger and smarter than me.”
And Jesus answered and said unto him, “Well, you got one thing right!”
